Playing Online Blackjack

Blackjack is an easy game to learn but it does take a little skill and strategy to play and have the best odds of winning. Blackjack is popular because it is easy to learn and has one of the lowest “house edges” (the advantage built into the game for the casino) of any casino game.

When playing Blackjack it is you the player against the dealer. The goal is to get as close to 21 without going over and have a better hand than the dealer. Face cards are always worth 10 and Aces can be used as 1 or 11. All other cards are played at face value.

If you receive 21 with only two cards that is a “Blackjack” and you win your bet at 3:2 odds. The only time a Blackjack does not win is if the dealer also has a blackjack. With the exception of winning blackjack and being paid 3:2, all other bets are paid at even money. If you and the dealer tie it is a “push” and your bet is returned.

In blackjack, the dealer must always hit (take a card) if he has a total of 16 or less. If the dealer has 17 or higher he always stands. The only exception to this is if the dealer has a soft 17, then he will hit. A soft 17 is an Ace and 6 using the Ace as 11.

When playing, the players cards are always dealt face up and the dealer receives 1 card up and 1 card down. When trying to determine what the dealer has you always assume he has a 10 underneath. So if he is showing a 10 you assume he has 20 and play your hand accordingly. If the dealer has a 5 up you assume he has 15 and must hit regardless what your hand is. Basic strategy tells you to stand on any hand totaling 12 or higher because you assume the dealer must hit and will break (go over 21). This is where you will see players stand on 13 and win the hand. Even though you have 13 and say the dealer has 15, he still must hit and if he breaks you win!

Types of Blackjack Bets

Other bets in Blackjack is the ability to double down and split your hand. In both instances this can only be done on your first 2 cards. Doubling down allows you to double your bet and you receive 1 more card. Regardless of the card you receive you must stand at this point. Good times to double down is when you have a total of 10 or 11 with your first 2 cards and the dealer must hit. You know the dealer must hit if his up card is a 6 or lower (exception being if the dealer has an ace below and he would have 17).

Another popular bet is “splitting” your hand. You can split your cards when you are dealt a pair on your first two cards. To split your hand you would put up the same bet amount and then you have two hands each with one of your original cards. For example, you are dealt 8-8. You can split these cards and have two hands each with an 8. Each hand is then played separately and you can take as many additional cards as you like. When you split a hand you can also double down when you receive your first card for either hand.

In blackjack, the chance to double down and split is really where you can make most of your money. When you double down with a 10 or 11 the chances of winning the hand are high as you expect to receive a 10 giving you a total of 20 or 21. When you split cards you also are doubling your bet so you have the chance to win more. When splitting hands, if the dealer has a 6 or less you are assuming he will break (go over 21) and the chances of winning both hands increases.

One other bet type you may find is the “Surrender” bet. You can surrender or fold your hand after you receive your first two cards. In order to surrender you must pay the dealer half of your original bet. We do not use the surrender bet and encourage players not to as well. Many professional blackjack players also say not to surrender. When playing online blackjack the surrender bet is not always available. The same is true when playing at a land based casino. It is the casinos decision whether to allow the surrender bet and about half do and half do not.

Live Blackjack Online

If you want more of a traditional casino feel, try out the USA live dealer blackjack tables. In live blackjack you watch the dealer and your cards over a live streaming feed. You can see and chat with the dealer and other players in real time and watch as the dealer deals the cards and plays out the hand.

If you like higher limits the live dealer tables are the place to be. Bet as much as $1000 per hand for online blackjack at USA live casinos.
