Best Movies for Casino Fans
Hollywood loves the casino almost as much as we do. The perfect mix of glamour, money, danger, mobsters and wise guys has made casinos a huge part of Hollywood history and here we take a look at five of the best movies to either be set in and around a casino or to have some damn fine casino scenes. If you don’t feel like hitting the tables now, watch one of these great movies and you’ll be booking those tickets to Vegas or heading to your favorite online casino faster than you can say “blackjack”!
The 2001 remake of the 1960 original stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Elliot Gould, Casey Affleck, Carl Reiner, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and even Lennox Lewis. It’s a slick romp about a Vegas heist and whilst it’s not the grittiest film on our list it’s certainly one of the most fun, with several superb scenes in a number of casinos.
Casino certainly ticks the gritty box, as you would expect from a movie directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. It also ticks – and then some – the violence box. There’s a glamorous Sharon Stone, Pesci as menacing as ever and some brilliant blackjack moments, with all sides of casino life, the good, the bad and the ugly, shown in all their glory.
Daniel Craig’s first appearance as British super-spy James Bond sees him go up against an excellent villain in a game of Texas hold ‘em. In the original version they played chemin de fer but for a modern audience poker was deemed more suitable. We won’t reveal what happens but, poker fan or not, this scene – and the whole movie – are far too good to miss.
Ok, another poker scene from a classic poker movie and, in truth, it’s not in a casino at all, but Matt Damon is so damn cool, Rounders makes our list anyway. Walking in on a game of rich, powerful judges and lawyers, Damon’s character correctly calls every hand at the table just from their wagering and “tells”.
The 1974 movie starring James Caan has recently been reimagined with Mark Wahlberg playing the lead but the original remains the better watch. The story tells of a gambling-addicted professor who wins big, loses, wins some more and ends up in a downward spiral. We like the bits when he cleans up at the casino though!
